It was the greatest do-over in the history of do-overs…

I was in Virginia on a consulting job, working with a guy who had just fired his whole staff and was starting over with all new people.

He wanted a more “family” feel in his business, so he brought in his son and a few of his son’s friends.

The night I arrived, we were all sitting at dinner talking about the pawn business, what we were going to be doing for the next couple of days, and how we were going to do it…

When out of the corner of my eye, I noticed one of the son’s friends getting more and more excited. I mean, the guy could literally not contain himself – he was almost bouncing in his seat.

Just when I thought he might jump up and shout Hallelujah! he turned to the owner’s son and said, “Bro… we’re MF’ing pawnbrokers now!” and gave him a fist bump.

Seeing these guys get so excited about becoming pawnbrokers got me thinking…

When was the last time I saw that excitement in the eyes of my staff?

Heck, when was the last time I let myself feel that excitement for myself??

It’s a privilege to be in this business. We get to serve all kinds of people…

…from the guy who’s found hidden treasure in his attic…

…to the new dad saying goodbye to his old drum kit to clear space in the new baby’s room…

…to the kid who’s there with his mom to buy a practice amp so he can jam on the guitar Santa brought him for Christmas…

{I’d like to have a word with the Man in Red about all the things kids need to go with that new guitar… but then we wouldn’t get their business, sooooo… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ }

So what do we do to rekindle that feeling of excitement for the pawn business?

I know for me, the work I do consulting with other pawnbrokers and helping them build and grow their businesses keeps me on fire.

I regularly hear from members of the Pawn Leaders Alliance who say the energy they get from interacting with our community re-ignites their fire.

And our Pawn Leaders Mastermind… well, that’s just a freakin’ bonfire.
