There is a lot of talk in the business world about being flexible. It's considered one of the key ingredients to success. But is flexibility always a good thing? I would argue that too much flexibility can lead to complacency and stagnation. Let me explain why.
How can flexibility lead to complacency and why it's important to have systems in place?
A friend once told me "flexibility is a gateway to complacency." This quote implies that when you don't have a structure, game plan, or process and procedures, you won't improve every day, you won't have the discipline to do what your business needs, and thus you'll become complacent. When you're always bending over backward to accommodate others, it's easy to let your guard down and stop pushing yourself. This is why it's so important to have systems in place in your business - so that you can maintain your flexibility while still achieving your goals.
For example, you might be tempted to waive fees, in order to attract customers. However, if you do this without having a system in place, you could easily find yourself in a situation where you're not making enough money to cover your costs.
On the other hand, if you have a system in place that allows you to be flexible while still maintaining your profitability, you'll be able to grow your business much more effectively.
Sadly, I see more pawnbrokers nationwide become more complacent than ever. They become content with the status quo and don't look to innovate or change. This is a recipe for disaster, especially in today's ever-changing economy.
If you want to be successful in the pawn industry - or in any business - it's essential that you have systems and strategies in place. But it's also essential that you're willing to be flexible and adapt those systems as needed. The most successful businesses are always the ones that are able to change and grow with the times.
What parts of your life have you been complacent about?
It could be your relationships, your business, or your health. Whatever it is, take a moment to reflect on what you could do to change things for the better.
If you're not happy with where you are in life, don't be afraid to make some changes. Flexibility and adaptability are key ingredients for success. If you're willing to put in the work, anything is possible!
You'll be left in the dust if you don't have the appropriate process and procedures in place. You might get left in the dust if you're not leading, aren't studying leadership, and don't have accountability partner/s.
Let's talk about the cost of self-care in the medical sense. If you don't invest in yourself and your health today, you'll pay more for it down the road. The same goes for your business. If you're not constantly growing and learning, you'll likely fall behind the competition.
What are some of the core values that you live by? Are they things like hard work, dedication, and determination? These are all great qualities to have, but they won't get you very far if you don't have a plan or a system to follow.

Ways to stay flexible while avoiding complacency
